Writing them is good, but I think SAYING them will really help too. That way he won't have to write them out when he's trying to do long division--he will have them down verbally and can say them to himself. The only advice I can give there is to have him write them repeatedly as extra homework for the next couple of weeks and quiz him regularly on them. Repetition!
