We had parent teacher interviews tonight and I came away with two bits of unsettling information.

1. Parker doesn’t know his multiplication tables and the curriculum for the school, as it is, doesn’t provide the time for them to teach him the tables. The class will begin their lessons on Long Division in two weeks, and unless he knows hos tables by then, he is screwed. Nice of them to wait until NOW to let me about this.

2. Blake’s teacher said that “Hopefully” at the end of next week, the school will begin vaccinating children against H1N1. I am still so very very uncertain if I want to vaccinate them. I mean, we’ve never gotten them the regular flu vaccine, is H1N1 really that different? There are, of course, cases where a child gets H1n1 and dies within a small amount of time, but the same can be said about the regular flu. I can’t trust anything I read in thenews becuase so much of the information is being sensationalized, so who do I listen to?

I will talk to one person and make up my mind that yes, they will get the shot, only to talk to person B and change my mind. Over and over and OVER.

In unrelated news, last weekend, Logan took money that he had saved up over the past five years and finally went shopping. He bought a small remote control car. We left the store with him clutching his bag in both hands and he told me, excitedly “I always wanted a remote control. I begged and begged for one!…..now I have one, and cus I bought-ed it. I don’t have to say Thank You, do I?”

I made him say thank you to his “money jar” when we got home.

  1. Logan is still my favourite. I totally thought of him watching my zombie film earlier.

  3. Wow. Yeah, I’d say them letting you know that multiplication is an issue right before moving on to division is a teacher fail.

  4. Wow. Way to let things slide until the last second, teach. You could have been working on them for weeks by now. The only advice I can give there is to have him write them repeatedly as extra homework for the next couple of weeks and quiz him regularly on them. Repetition!

As far as the shot, what you have to decide is if the potential risks (and, btw, they are small) are greater than the risks from the virus. Go here: http://www.cdc.gov/h1n1flu/, read up, make your decision and don’t ask anybody else. Opinions are like assholes, remember? The only one that counts is yours.

If it helps any, Lil’ M will be getting the H1N1 vaccine. I’m confident that all will be well.

  6. Yes, do the repetition thing with the times tables. Writing them is good, but I think SAYING them will really help too. That way he won’t have to write them out when he’s trying to do long division–he will have them down verbally and can say them to himself. Just a thought . . .

  7. I’m just FLOORED that “the curriculum for the school, as it is, doesn’t provide the time for them to teach him the tables”. FLOORED. Did you ask the teacher to let you know earlier from now on if THEY CAN’T DO THEIR JOB?

    wow.

I agree with the others…repetition and practice.
