It was horrible. I cried

My Lap Top died Friday Night.

I’m not easy on computers, I need to have two, three, eleven windows open at all times. I download between 100 and 1000 pictures a week and I watch a lot of videos and use a lot of programs that are heavy on JAVA.  Once in a blue moon I turn it off for the night.

I had noticed my laptop was acting up a few weeks ago. If I had a few windows open, the whole thing would crash. The fan was almost always on, and it was going hard, very loud. All the websites that used to load almost instantly were taking minutes – if they did not time out before they finished loading at all!

I kept asking Micah to please, for the love of all types of chocolate, PLEASE copy my pictures onto a CD so I don’t lose them. I KNEW the death of my laptop was imminent. Finally, Friday night I brought up the CD’s and told my husband I would ask someone on twitter to walk me through the process.

Then I loaded my FarmVille page to harvest my Blueberries.

And that’s when my laptop died.

The screen turned black, and the power light dimmed and then shut off completely. Repeatedly we tried to turn the power back on. Nothing.

I can haz a Black Screen of death.

26.5 GB (28,486,205,440bytes) of pictures, LOST.

Gone forever.

Micah and I fought. We don’t have the money to replace the laptop, but I NEED it. Not just for facebook, blogging and twitter, But I work from it. I make money with this laptop. We do ALL of our banking with this laptop. I JUST signed Parker up for Fall football and was expecting an email stating the date of the first practice with this laptop.

And still, there is NO money to replace it, and there is NO way I want one on credit!

I was crushed. I could do the banking and check my email with the iTouch. I can even blog, though it would be hard, with the iTouch, but dammit. My pictures were gone. Most of Logan’s life is in those picture files I have stored. Four of his five years, ALL gone. Birthdays, Vacations, Playing at the park, all of them, gone.

And then Micah took the back off the laptop and vacuumed the dog hair from the fan and all was well again.

I SHOULD really get those pictures onto CD now…

  1. My photos are backed up three different ways and stored at three different places… you can’t be too careful with stuff like this.

  3. Back those up immediately, babe. Everything else can take a flying leap, but those pictures are irreplacable.

  4. I bet a lot of the pictures are on Flicker, so they’re not gone, just hard for you to get to at the moment.

It’s very possible the stuff on your computer could be extracted by a professional. The hard drive could be removed and the things on it copied. And it may be a small fix, to fix that computer.

    Don’t give up yet!

  5. Dudette!

You should totally get an external HDD. It goes much faster to backup your pictures, and the prices keep dropping! You can get 1TB for 130$ here.

And like Candy said: You can always recover stuff from a HDD, unless it’s physically destroyed. If your laptop ever dies, I’m just a Purolator package away.

  7. UNTIL you do all of the above, go to snapfish.com and put those pictures there! Free storage! And if it ever goes out of business, by then you should have them all on cd’s. Or backed up in all those places people are talking about.
BTW this was NOT a paid announcement, lol! I just really like snapfish.

  8. Spend the 100 bucks on the external hard drive to dump those pics on if you don’t have time to put them all on cd!!!!!!
