When you figure it out, can you let me know what finally worked?? My red heeler (4 months old) puppy is an outside puppy most of the time because we can not get him to stop peeing in the house. We make him pee outside before he comes in and within 5 MINUTES, he is peeing on the floor. UGH!

And she is quite cute!

When I got my dog, she was a year and a half and not potty trained. I just had to watch her constantly, and you can see them get that "look" or start sniffing for a spot. She would start sniffing the dirt in my potted plants.
Then I would just yell, "Outside! Outside!" and put her out, then I would stand there and say "Go potty! Go Potty!"
She learned REALLY fast.
I think the proper way I remember reading somewhere is to, yes, watch your time and keep trying to take them out. When you're going out the door say "Outside! Outside!" and while you're out there say, "Go potty! Go potty!" and then praise them when they do.

Now, even if she doesn't really have to go, but I'm leaving for a while or whatever, I take her to the door and say "Go potty!" and she'll go or at least try on command.
When she is just inside and really has to go, she comes and prances at me, and I say "Outside?" and she runs to the door.

I've never crated a dog, so I don't know about that, but heard they won't try to go potty in a crate?

Unfortunately the whole crate training thing falls in line with getting children to go to bed and sleep in their own beds at night. Tough love.

I have two dogs (one is a 7 month old puppy) and we crate trained them both. Fortunately, we got very lucky and the breeders had already started the process (THANK GOD!) so when we got them they weren't a pain in the butt to train. One of my previous dogs was though and as much of a pain as it is, it's best for both of you if you just suffer through it.

Our puppy will whine in the morning or if we have her in her crate and come home from somewhere. We -never- let her out until she settles down and stops whining.

The vet is 100% right. If your dog isn't improving on the housebreaking front you absolutely must do something to get it under control. Crate training is the best way to do this. If you stop taking her out when she whines, she will stop. The only reason she continues it now is because she knows it works.

If you are totally against it, the only other option you have is to have the puppy on a lead all the time in the house so she can never go out of your sight. That way if/when she does try to pee inside you will catch her in the act and can tell her no etc.

Leaving her out of the crate to pee on the floor because you think putting her in the crate is cruel is completely counter productive.

@Nobody™ - We use her crate at night, and when we go out, but she cries and cries and cries when she is in it and we are at home walking around and having fun. She can hold it all night, so the vet said to start taking her out every 2-3 hours to start and work our way up from there.
