Waiting is hard

This is Sammi’s bed. As you can see, I was unable to wait seven whole days, so that we could see how big she is, before I went out to buy her toys. They might be too big for her, or too small, but at least she won’t be coming home to an empty bed!

Just a size comparison to show you how big Smokey’s bed is. Sammi’s kennel will fit her from puppyhood to when she is fully grown. (I am basing this on how big my father’s dog, Joey, is, joey’s mom and dad are Sammi’s mom and dad, too!)

Smokey is extremly interested now that the kennel is filled with things. She is certain the pink plushy puppy is for her, and will sit and whine at the bedroom door when it is closed. I’m a little worried about Smokey feeling overly possessive of things once Sammi comes home to stay. Any advice on that? Or on introducing Sammi and Smokey?

Friday is the big day!

  1. I say lock them both in the closet for a day and a half and they’ll be properly introduced.

  4. I love new puppies! (Okay, DUH.) We’ve found that my-toys-your-toys is a grand way to start a fight. Sadly, Smokey may have to take over the new stuff if it means keeping peace. But they’ll make their own way, just like kids.

    Waiting to see pictures…

  5. Smokey will enjoy Sammi for the first couple of hours — a toy! And then she’ll get jealous when she realizes Sammi’s not going away. Make sure you give Smokey a lot of attention in the first few weeks. She’ll adjust; she’s only a year or so old, right?

  6. My advice would be to crate them both for a few minutes as soon as Sammi comes home. Place them next to each other so that they can sniff each other and possible get over the “welcome attack energy” Then let them out together.

Is there any way to get something that already smells like Sammi that you can place in the new crate and let Smokey get a smell from it?

  8. If they fight over a toy, let them hash it out. If it gets too physical though, take away the toy from both of them. After all, you are the top dog in their eyes. (or you should be!)
