I Could Cry. Oh wait. I DID cry

We bought our house three years ago, after seven plus years of renting. Finally a place of our own, one that we are free to paint, decorate and landscape to our liking. First thing we did; the disgusting shrubbery in the front was torn out, and in it’s place, two of the most precious apple trees you will ever find.

For two summers, I picked off apple blossoms to prevent any fruit from growing, hating myself for doing it, yet knowing my tiny trees were not mature enough to take the weight.

Finally, My trees turn three years old. We decided to leave the blossoms on, and watch carefully. I was fully prepared to sacrifice the apples should the tree show ANY signs of distress, but none came, and we were set to harvest our eight shining apples in another nineteen days.

Except, last night we had a storm. And with last nights storm, we had hail. Can you see where this is going? I bet you can.

Carnage. Hubs tells me that even though the leaves are so horribly shredded, the tree itself is fine and will survive, but the apples are a total loss. By the time Mid August rolls around - that’s when Parkland Apples are ripe, the bruising and cuts from the hail will have rotted them.

  3. We had an apple tree when we moved into our house. It was fully mature, and had hundreds of apples. I hated that fucking thing. Apples fell all over the place and would then rot. The backyard smelled like a distillery. I cut that fucker down and now I use the wood in my smoker. Finally, that miserable tree is useful! I can buy apples at the grocery store.

  5. I’m sorry about your apples! At least your trees will be around next year, and a little more mature to handle the fruit.

I wouldn’t mind having 2 trees. My great-grandmother had a whole backyard full of apple trees and my grandparents had a small orchard. With the bees, vinegary smell, oh, and the bees, I couldn’t stand going around the trees after the apples started falling.

  8. I had an apple tree from my childhood home, the apples were always crap. They ended up in the lawn and you ended up stepping on rotten apples with your bare feet  It was a great tree for climbing though. I had a cherry tree too, the cherries were yummy.

  17. Major bummer! Can the apples be salvaged for applesauce?
I know that when the birds beat my mom to her apples, she cuts out the pecked-at parts and makes applesauce with the remainder.

  18. Sorry about your baby apples.

My dad has an apple tree in his backyard, it’s been there for years. The apples were never very good, not sure why. Anyways, it’s right next to his tool shed, under which lives a family of groundhogs. They LOVE the windfall apples and will carry them back to their front door, where they eat them, and then throw the cores into a little pile nearby! It’s hysterical–especially when the apples have started to ferment–they start staggering and falling over!

  20. Awww. Poor little baby apples!

I’m not fond of any kind of tree that drops stuff on the ground, although I might do an (as in 1) apple tree just because apple blossoms rock so freaking hard.

Our new house has 2 huge black walnut trees and they make an incredible mess of nuts. Here, you have to get special permission to cut down black walnut trees because they’re ‘protected’…which I so totally want them down…they block a ton of light. Not to mention I am totally not even a little bit about raking up a metric fuckton of nuts.

These trees are gigantic though. HUGE.

  21. Sorry blue! :-(

That storm, I was watching the weather channel and when the satellite showed the storms over your area again, and the reports of the tornado near Radisson and then the funnel clouds north of the city, I was telling the fraccy family about you and how you hate storms and this year, they’re all over you.

We only got small hail here.

Karma better get her shit together; I think you should be due for some better luck now…

  24. Did you pick off the damaged apples - the ones that are like the photo? I would suggest doing that - to prevent insects from deciding to eat them, and then move on to the tree. Just a thought.

Sucks, looks like they would have been tasty!

  25. Aw, honey, I’m sorry. I know how much that sucks. Do you have horses anywhere near by? They love apples and you and the kids could maybe get some smiles from feeding them to the horses. Just a suggestion.
