Time’s Up

I’m very late getting to the computer tonight, Sheila sent me a box of goodies and what was supposed to be a one hour bath turned into three becuase one of the books she sent – A painted house, is VERY good, and I lost track of time.

My husband has been complaining for about a month that the photos on BPR load very slowly for him, becuase they do not on my laptop, I have ignored his complaints. Today I got an e-mail from Katie (thanks!) telling me she too was having problems.

Both Katie and Hubs have high speed internet, as do I (duh) so that gets me really worried about those of you who are on a slower connection.

I have been loading my pictures up through the dashboard picture loader icon thingamabobdoodad for a while now, is that the problem? Should I go back to hosting them in photobucket and just putting the embed link in my post?

What options do I have here? In the past two weeks I have taken between 50-100 photos A DAY, and some of them NEED to be shared!

Help!

  2. I was worried I was the only one who had noticed it!

I’m not sure how to fix it, I mean it’s not the end of the world, it just takes a little longer to load, but there might be something simple that can prevent it. Whatever you do, don’t stop posting pictures!

  4. I don’t think the photos load slowly. If you didn’t want to use your server for them, I’d recommend using Flickr instead of Photobucket.

  5. Don’t upload the full sized pics to the server, resize them first (I use photoshop for that. After that use save for web, and that will reduce the filesize some more).

By setting the size attribute when you post them you aren’t actually changing the size of the pic, you are just telling peoples browser to display the image at that size. Not only will they load faster if resized first, it saves disk space and bandwidth on the server.

  7. I noticed, I am on high-speed and they take a few moments to load.
How are you uploading them to your server? Straight out of the camera?

I always resize photos for the web in Photoshop. Like, the biggest I can make them without torking out the middle of my blog template is 6 inches wide. So I crop them and, most importantly, set the resolution at 72 pixels per inch. Or in Photoshop, you can crop it and then do “save for web”.

  8. “A Painted House” was soooo good. I read the hard copy and my hubby listened to it on CD and liked it, too.

Good info on resizing pics in Photoshop–whenever I download them off the memorycard into my documents, and then attach for email, they come out way too big. Gonna try this photoshop thing! Thanks, you guys!

  9. @Sheila – LOL I finished chesepeak Blue and A Painted house, I’m on the last one now!

@Katie – When it was just hubs i was not concerned, but when it bugs my visitor, then it bugs me!

@Mr. Fabulous – Well, yea.. How else would a marriage work?

@Avitable – Flickr huh? Do those photos come with an embed code?

@Nobody™ – Ok, I went to photoshop to check that out, so I am sure I will be able to save them “web”ish, but I will have to rename them first right? or I will lose my full resolution copy, right?

@Finn – I finished it with my morning coffee this morning! It was great!

@annie – Some are SOOC, some ar after I have played with them in photoshop, I will try the PS resizing thing first, and cross my fingers!

@phinz – Yea, Sheila sent me the hardcover copy cus she is rich and does not care about postal costs apparently!

And I never thought about that but that woudl work a lot better for email attachments, wouldn’t it!

when are you going to get a blog so i can see who you are, anyway??!!

  14. Blue-
I just noticed that if I click on the picture, it takes me to the extra-large-GARGANTUAN size. That right there is your problem. Before you upload them to your webpage, crop them down smaller to the size you want to show up in the page (like I said, maybe 6 x 4 inches) and also, with a 72 resolution (pixels-per-inch). That’s what us here web designers call “Fancy Talk”.

  15. @Robin – 1. I have no idea where to find the lightbox plugin
    2. I still have no idea how to install plug ins
    3. I suck

@Tug – I’ve never noticed your photos uploading slow. But then, on my laptop the ones of BPR don’t load slow either.

@annie – Uhm. pixels per square inch talk is WAY beyond me. WAY.

  19. Yup it’s the file size. The properties of the lovely Smokey in a bue dress tell me that it’s 20.3 MB in size. MB, not KB. It only fits in the screen of my Photoshop widow at 16.9%. At 100% it’s like upteen inches wide. Typically, digital photos are quite large in size and need to be edited before upload to the net.
