Go ask your dad

We are pretty strict about bedtime at our house, mainly because once bedtime comes, I am DONE. Done with whining, done with fighting, done with fetching glasses of water and picking up cookie crumbs. Done.Done.Done.

Every so often though, we ignore bedtime, more in the summer months than the winter. Tonight was one of those nights. BFF Kissy had a night off work, the first in weeks, so we all loaded up and headed to the city to meet her for coffee.

Often, Logan,3, amuses himself by telling us about everything he can see, from a bit of dirt on his shoes, to a horse out the window. As we rounded the last curve to our house, Logan pointed and exclaimed: “A Sunset Mommy! A Sunset!!” then he got quiet. Just before we parked in our driveway, Logan spoke up again, this time with a question; How did the sunset get here?

As per usual, when I do not know the answer I tell him to ask his dad. But, If you had been sitting in the car with us, what would You have told Logan? How does a person explain sunsets and the earths rotation to a three year old?

    Seriously.

  3. You tell the three-year-old that the Earth turns and the Sun doesn’t and that’s why the Sun seems to move across the sky. It’s night when your part of the Earth is turned away from the Sun. You can use an apple and an orange to demonstrate or Google a visual for him.

He will understand, and if he doesn’t, he’ll ask questions. And you’ll answer them. You’d be amazed at how much kids “get it.”

  4. Pffft. It’s like the mailman. It gets around to every house eventually. At different times of the day, especially during different seasons… Hey, it worked for my kid until 1st grade when they learned about the sun and planets.

  5. Our baby, (he’s 3 also) was fascinated by the North Pole site at Christmas, but they use that flat map of the Earth to show where Santa was. He likes looking at certain sites on the computer, so I have “Google Earth” and I put it on his desktop (he has his own log-in). He understands (I think) that we live on the earth and the earth is round and the stars around it are what we look up and see and the sun is a big star farther away and we spin around on the earth.
He kind of gets it! He tells people about it, like “See the stars? We live on the earth and it’s round.” Pretty cute.

Yeah, it takes a lot more time and patience as they get older, huh? I’m counting on him being able to READ and “Google” for the birds-and-the-bees talk.

  6. I would told my daughter “that’s just what happens every night”.

I’m not good at thinking of wonderfully creative explanations. That’s my husband’s job!
