Don’t judge me*

remember a few months ago I bitched to high heaven that the school wanted Rainbow man to be tested for ADD/ADHD and I said fuck that. no way I am putting my kid on drugs? Whatever. I’m allowed to change my mind. He went through a bunch of tests, and a three hour wait for a twenty minute doctor appointment and is now the prowd owner his very own bottle of amphetamines.

Yay. I’m giving my eight year old son speed. Go me.

Sigh.

*I’m doing enough of it myself

  2. the thing to remember is that you’re just trying this out. if this isn’t what is best for your son, you’ll change it. but, at least you’ll know instead of thinking, “well, what if we tried…”

  3. Don’t beat yourself up over it. If he needs them, he needs them. There is a difference between needing a medication and drugging your kid so YOU can handle them. I don’t think that’s what you’re doing.

  12. as vinnie barbarino used to say, “gimme drugs, gimme drugs!” I’m with the others, if it helps him slow down and focus, good deal. If he turns into a zombie, do the cold turkey and chalk it up to experience.

  14. My son was on Ritalin years ago. It really helped. They have so many more medications available now.

Again, like everyone else said, watch him, watch how he reacts, watch his appetite, espcially. If you don’t like something, tell the doctor, change meds if you need to.

And trust on your Mother Radar!

  17. not that you need my two cents, but I’ll give them to you anyway - If he needs them - he needs them. If he was diabetic you would give him insulin. ’nuff said.

  18. Thank you. i will keep you all updated on his progress. A few things - he was tested thoroughly by a professional, then examined by his doctor. he will be having regular appointments with his doctor to check on his weight ( loss of appetite is a side effect) and to regulate the dosage he will need. right now he is on the lowest possible dose.

  20. Usedtobeme:

    http://provigil.com/pat/default.aspx

Provigil (pronounced just as if you were at a vigil) is a medication that is usually used for people with sleep apnea, but it is a wonder in terms of energy. I use it “as needed”, which means every day. But you can always ask your dr. about it.

It gives you a lot of energy, and usually lasts about six hours for me. It comes in 200 mg form, but for you, what would probably be best is 100 mg in the morning and 100 mg no later than 1 p.m.

“Ask your doctor about provigil today.” LOL

  21. Hey at least he went through all the testing. A lot of parents just demand meds and the doctor’s give it. That’s how my nieces got on to Ritalin which they didn’t need.

If this works for RM, then great. HUGS

  22. I’m the queen of knowing ADHD blue. My older child was on it in the early nineties when people didn’t bloody well understand anything about it and so because they really *had* to, said tons of rude and ill-informed things to us. You are not a bad mother. A bad mother watches her child go through something and does nothing but wish it weren’t so. The meds are only ’speed’ to someone who doesn’t have ADD/ADHD. To someone who does, they can be as necessary as the insulin others have used as an example. Do not doubt yourself.

One really useful thing you can do is learn 1-2-3 Magic. (A behaviour management technique created by Dr. Thomas W. Phelan) We used it and it was like a miracle. In fact, his teacher found it so useful, she used it as her classroom management technique. Our son could only take meds until about grade three, and then we chose to take him off of it because of some side-effects that weren’t worth it anymore. If a person has to go it without meds, the 1-2-3- Magic is really worth bajillions.

One thing you might find is that taking those meds may make him lose his appetite. Ours did. We never gave him meds on weekends or holidays so that he would eat well on those days to make up. In the meanwhile, we added those calorie rich meal replacement drinks once in a while to help with that.

Another thing, is that there are lots of diet-related things you can do to help make a difference with or without meds. I’ve got tons of stories and info, used to do a support group. If you ever feel like you need to talk to someone, you know how close I live. Email me and give me your number if you want. (I’m curious to know which Dr. diagnosed. We have way more experience than we wish we had with everyone in Child Psychiatry.)

Hugs! A good mom makes all the difference. You’re a good mom.
